CarMax – The Auto Superstore

Project History

CarMax opened its doors back in 1993 and has become the largest used-car retailer in the U.S. Beginning in 2012, Conproco’s protective coatings were chosen to cover and seal the auto reseller’s newly constructed split faced concrete block buildings and security walls.
To achieve the desired look detailed by architects, Conproco provides color matched Lastic Smooth and Lastic Sanded (for vertical surfaces) and Elastideck (for the capstone site walls). In an effort to extend the warranty life of these applied coatings, our on-site chemist developed a new primer, Lightweight Bloc Prep, for use on both the main building and security site walls. With this new high performing primer added to the system of coatings, the warranty coverage doubled from five to 10 years.
The entire process includes applying three layers on all vertical faces including one coat each of Lightweight Block Prep, Conpro Lastic Sanded, and Conpro Lastic Smooth with a final capstone application of Elastideck on the site wall to cover the bed joint and prevent water intrusion.
CarMax has also been using Conproco products to update its gray color scheme on many older buildings to a tan dark base and light stripe.
So far, we’ve warrantied protective coatings on both old and new CarMax properties in over 17 states across the U.S. (including AL, CA, FL, ID, MA, MI, MN, NJ, NV, NY, OK, OR, PA, TN, TX, VA, WA).
